Kumihimo - What is it?

Kumihimo comes from ancient Japanese culture.  Samouraï warriors used cords made of interlaced threads to attach their armors, helmets, and even their horses’ protective armors.   On this photo of an ancient Samuraï armor, we can see Kumihimo cords at the waist and under the helmet.

Today, Kumihimo cords are still used to attacher different elements of Japanese kimonos.

Here we are interested in something else : Kumihimo is used in the making of beautiful jewelry pieces, sometimes with added pearls, beads, pendants and cabochons.

The creative possibilities are endless.  Below are a few examples of jewelry pieces created by several artists.  Magnificent work!

When starting to learn the Kumihimo technique, it is recommended to create simple cords, without beads.  Here also, the possibilities are many, as you can see on some of mine on the photo at right.  Once the beginner technique is mastered, we can start adding beads to new projects.  This technique is much more difficult and requires rigorous attention because it is easy to make errors.

I will soon add my video tutorials in English.  Stay tuned!
